Conversa Party
Wednesday Evening
by Rick Smith (November 17, 1999)
Conversa Technology had a party on Comdex Wednesday at the Star Trek Experience and Quark's Bar located in the Las Vegas Hilton. It was a fun event. Here are some pictures:

Jim and Klingon
Jim Bennett, of Reviews OnLine, and a Klingon enjoy the Conversa party.

Brent Spiner and Renee
Brent signed autographs from Conversa partygoers. This is a picture of him posing with Renee, PR Director of Dragon Systems. This low light shot was taken with the Toshiba PDR-M5, using its built-in flash.

Klingon scowling for the camera
While I took this picture, this Klingon asked me some details about my camera. He scoffed at my primitive technology that only recorded a two-dimensional version of him - he was NOT impressed. This Klingon also showed me that you don't shake a Klingon's hand like humans do, but grab to the elbow so "you can check for weapons".

Eclectic patterns on the bar top
I "captured" a movie of these moving patterns with the Sharp Internet camera for about a minute. I then showed Quark the camera and told him that I had stolen this image. He told me that he didn't mind, but if I made money off of this image - he wanted a percentage. When I asked him why, he said that without him, I wouldn't have any image. Initially he wanted 40 percent and I then countered with 10 percent. He responded with 35 percent and I went to 20 percent. He countered again with 30 percent. I went to 20. He replied with 25 and I then decided to radically alter the negotiations and countered with the most unusual NINE percent. Without hesitation, he countered with 75 percent and screamed "Deal, deal". Apparently, he had been down the negotiation path before and proved that he was a true Ferengi.

Quark from Star Trek
Outside his bar, at the Conversa party, Quark pauses for a moment to mug for our camera.
No, the Enterprise wasn't there.
