Acer Veriton Flat Panel PC
One of the quiet giants of PC manufacturing, Acer, just introduced a line of all-in-one PCs that may just wake up its better know rivals. The Veriton Flat Panel PC (starting at $2100) is an all-in-one unit that tosses out the tired old CPU pizza-box or mini-tower design. Instead, Acer has put a capable Pentium III CPU (up to 600 MHz and 128 Mb RAM) along with a 24xCDROM or 24DVD-ROM drive, a hard disk (up to 10 Gb), and a 10/100 Ethernet adapter into a sleek inclosure tucked behind an integrated 15-inch LCD panel powered by a 8MB ATI RAGE LT PRO 3D accelerator. If you've always thought that a PC should be less a boat anchor and more of a high-style, high-performance information appliance, Acer just read your mind.

LizardTech - MrSID image compression
If you share large scientific or pre-press images you know that even WinZip can't shrink them to a more modem friendly size. Well, LizardTech has applied wavelet image compressionto the problem in the form of $495 MrSIDsoftware that can reduce high-res images down to as little as 3 percent of original size without visible loss of detail. Plug-ins for Photoshop or your web browser are a free download. What's more, the software can effectively "up-res" images, adding detail to large-format output.
