Review Philosophy
Focus on Value
Our reviewers pay critical attention to the performance, usability and the return on investment of a product. Products that receive a favorable review are useful and provide good value regardless of the marketing hype.
Real-world perspective
We review products using a variety of machines from small PDAs to desktop Pentiums, using a variety of operating systems, monitor resolutions and installed memory. We NEVER assume you have the fastest system that came out yesterday and are not afraid to say, "This is a great product but forget it unless you have the latest hardware". The specific platform used to evaluate the product is listed, so you can gauge your likely performance against ours.
Attention to Detail
We provide more information than can be gleaned from the product box, press release or a brochure. We cover WHAT a product can do (in detail), WHY you'd want to use it (or not) and WHAT tasks it is specifically suited for (or not).
Hands-on Process
Only the shipping product is reviewed, not beta copies. Although unreleased products may be announced and discussed, as news items, product reviews are never based on press releases or product demos. The editorial staff writes their own articles. Reviews are not written by manufacturers or their PR (public relations) agency.
"Life Cycle" reviews
Product reviews are ongoing and never forgotten. We actively seek out and publish feedback from readers and vendors about the product. We revisit products to describe how well they work with other products, months and years after the initial review. When new versions are released, past reviews of previous versions will be maintained.
Integrity
We will never accept ads from computer product vendors. In every review, we will fully disclose any ties to vendors.
