Article Search Help
By typing a few keywords relating to a particular topic, you will be able to search the full text and keywords of all articles on this site.

If you wish to search only product names or company names found in articles, not the full text of articles, a Product Search is also available.

The more detailed your entry, the more relevant your results, but if you get too specific, you may not get any results.

Type all the words in lower case, unless you are specifically looking for a topic with a particular capitalization. Using lowercase will find words in either upper, lower or mixed case.

By changing the Match pulldown from "All Terms" to "Any Term" will cause the search to be less selective and will find articles containing ANY of the entered words. Here is a simple example:

Translated:

  • If Match "All Terms" is set, the words "color" and "printing" will be searched for.

This will find articles that contain "color printing", "COLOR PRINTING" and even "printing in color". This will not find "color printer" in an article.

  • If Match "Any Terms" is set, articles returned with contain either "color" or "printing" or both words. This will find articles that contain "color printing", "COLOR PRINTING" and "printing in color". This will find "color printer" in an article since it contains the word "color".

This full-text search engine includes capabilities for the advanced user to help find exactly what you're looking for. Here are some examples:

    Translated:

  • This example works exactly the same as the first example above, except all articles with the word "laser" anywhere on the page, are not displayed. This can be a useful technique to narrow your search.

    Translated:

  • Although this looks similar to the first example above, the quotations marks cause the entire phrase "color printing" to be searched for. The words must be together without any intervening words. This will not find "printing in color", but will find "COLOR PRINTING".

    Translated:

  • This search will find articles that contain color printing as well as color printers. The asterisk is a wildcard representing any four or LESS characters.

    Translated:

  • Searches can be written several ways and the words "and" or "or" can be inserted into the text. This will find article that contain printing and favor those that also include the word "color". "black and white printing" would match, but those articles that include the word "color" would be higher on the list.

    Translated:

  • This example will find articles that contain Windows (case sensitive) and also the word "software", but eliminate any article that included the word "driver". An article that contains "software that requires Windows operating system" will appear first and then articles containing only the words "Windows software" will be displayed. Any articles containing only the lowercase words "windows system would not be listed. An article which contained "Windows software driver" would also not be listed since the word "driver" would eliminate this article.

    Translated:

  • The search engine ignores common words like where, is, and the, so this search will look for words containing "disk" such as "disk", "diskette" or "nondisk". If you wanted to search for these "common" words and suppress the ignore feature, use quotes around the entry, as in "Where is the *disk*?".

Don't forget about case sensitivity - only words or phrases containing an upper case character will be treated as case sensitive, so entering lower case words will result in more articles. A search on "usa" will match "Usa", "USA", and "usA", while the term "USA" will only match the uppercase version.

The asterisk is a powerful search tool, but has some limitations. It cannot span words - that is, the query "powerfu*earch" would not match the "Powerful search" - and it can represent, at most, four letters or numbers. This is done to avoid overly broad searches and the asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters. A search for "th*" would be ignored. Happy searching!

If all else fails, send us Feedback and we'll assist in your search.
