Winning on Windows
Top 75 ISVs announced
by Rick Smith (April 18, 1999)
Chicago Skyline at dusk When it began to grow dark in Chicago, a reception was held at the Chicago Historical Society, where Microsoft announced the the top 75 ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) for the Windows operating system for 1998.
Bill Reichert, president of garage.com, gave a keynote address about technology in the 20th century. He mentioned that radio, not the Internet, was the fastest adopted technology this century. Television and VCRs were second and third.
Tod Nielson, vice president of Microsoft Developer Marketing, not only announced the Top 10 Fastest Growing ISVs, but also described the Top 10 Letters received at Microsoft. Some of these letters were quite bizarre, but I thought that the most interesting one was from a child in Scandinavia, who simply printed a map of Seattle on the envelope, put a dot on the map and labeled it "Bill Gates" - and it arrived! Is Bill Gates becoming as well known as Santa Claus?

But the reason that several hundred people attended this event was the naming of the top ten ISVs. It was announced that NetIQ Corporation was the top ISV with a staggering 2,248.8% revenue growth rate. Wow! Here is a list of the top 10 ISVs announced.
