DuPont and DigiLens are slated to demonstrate the first full-color, hands-free microdisplay at Comdex this week. The combination of DuPont's tiny, high-res LCD display with DigiLens' wickedly clever holographic digital lens could make light, head-mounted displays with better-than-CRT clarity, a practical reality. Basically, DigiLens can command a single, thin piece of laminated glass to behave as one or more lenses in the space of a fraction of a second. Focused on multiple high- resolution "microdisplays" that are much cheaper to build than their larger LCD cousins, this technology could enable HDTV resolution displays masquerading as eyewear. Later applications envisioned include 3D displays incorporating depth-of-focus effects. Programmable lenses sound astoundingly useful and with optical computing being called the Next Big Thing, this technology may have real legs.
