2000 Hyundai Accent
by Jim Bennett
The 2000 Hyundai Accent has been redesigned and refined to sharpen up its image and performance to more effectively compete with Ford, Mazda, GM, Nissan and Chrysler in the basic transportation department. It's still based on the existing Hyundai small car platform with improvements such as a smoother shifting manual transmission and new vibration dampening engine mounts. The 1.5 liter, single cam, 12 valve, four cylinder engine produces 92 horsepower that provides reasonable acceleration for this market segment.
Evolutionary styling changes have increased the glass area and heightened the roof line to improve visibility and increase interior comfort, even for taller people. At prices ranging from $9,000 to $11,000, purchase cost is very reasonable. The depreciation issue has been creatively addressed by Hyundai's remarkable ten-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, (5 year, 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, including road side assistance). The warranty is transferable when the original owner sells the vehicle. This is an unusual guarantee by a manufacturer to prove it has improved its product and to enhance resale values.
